Willard High School
WHS All State BandHello, Willard High School families!

As we start the month of February, our students have transitioned well from one semester to the next! There have been many activities recently where students have been excelling as they become life-ready graduates! Some of the activities and accomplishments include:

Willard High School has a tradition of excellence! This year, we had 205 students who were eligible to participate in our annual Academic Awards Breakfast for their academic achievements! That is more than last year! These students have scored 25+ on their ACT and/or obtained a GPA of 3.667 both semesters last year. Congratulations to these students on their outstanding success! Great job!

Our wrestling team has been on a roll! They took home the team championship in Willard’s first-ever home wrestling tournament! Many wrestlers came near and far from schools to participate and there was a fantastic turnout. Great job, Tigers!

Our music program at Willard is having another fabulous year with students earning All-State honors:
All-State Band – Aaron Huffman – Euphonium
All-State Jazz Band – Tyler Textor – Bass Trombone
All-State Orchestra – Ariana Rios – Trumpet
All-State Choir – Levi Thedell
Chamber Choir was selected to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association’s (MMEA) State Conference and also performed the National Anthem for the Harlem Globetrotters at the JQH Arena! It was a huge honor for our All-State students and Chamber Choir to perform at these events!

Project Graduation sponsored Dancing with the Seniors where students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members from around the district came together. They were able to raise money for Project Graduation while having a great time. Noah Pfeifer and Rachel Young were announced as the 1st place team of the evening and then they handed over the 1st place medals to Mark Seeley and his mother, Sharon, who received a standing ovation during their performance! Our students shared this moment with each other and made everyone winners! Great job!

The Freshmen Preview Night was held for current 8th graders who will attend WHS this fall. Our Freshmen counselor for next year, Mrs. Nagle, welcomed incoming students and parents and there were booths of information where students learned about how to get involved. Thank you to Willard Middle School faculty, staff and administration during this process! One team, one Tiger!

As we look ahead, the scheduling process for next school year is coming up. Counselors have started talking with students and more information about the process will be provided in the coming weeks. This is very important as our students register for next year’s classes.

Please talk with your child about these many opportunities and be sure to view future events by visiting and you can follow me @DrKevinMorrison on Twitter and look for #WeAreWillard and #1Tiger.

Thank you and as always, it’s good to be a TIGER!

WMS Yearbook StaffGreat news! We just found out that the Willard Middle School yearbook staff received a Distinguished Merit award in the 2018 Lifetouch Yearbook Showcase Contest. The publications were sorted into four divisions and Yearbooks were evaluated on the following criteria: Theme/theme development, design, continuity, photography, writing, creativity content and coverage. "The books reflect hours of hard work by the staff and advisers" Laura Schaub, Lifetouch yearbook education specialist and contest coordinator, said. "These books are some of the best elementary and secondary books in the nation:" Congratulations to our awesome Yearbook staff for a job well done!

The Animal Exploration Action Class are having a supply drive to benefit the Humane Society through this month. Examples of items needed are dog and cat food, cleaning supplies, leashes, chew toys, blankets, newspapers, etc. These items can be dropped off in the office or Mrs. Fritsche's classroom.

Please enjoy the 4th edition of the WMS Tiger News and the latest edition of The Growl Magazine for all our news and updates.
Willard Intermediate School- North
January marked a big milestone for WIS-North with the start of our Student Leadership Teams. Each of our students were given the opportunity to select the teams they thought would be a good fit for their interests and abilities. These 26 teams have been working to define their mission and find ways to have a positive impact on their school community. We look forward to seeing their plans turn into action! WISN Action Team

Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the state wide Chiefs spirit week. Is was fun to see everyone rally around their "home" team and celebrate a big Super Bowl win.

This week we had the opportunity to honor our amazing school counselor, Mrs. Skaggs. As a long time member of the district and building we saw many familiar faces stop by and celebrate her positive influence in their lives. WIS-North is blessed to benefit from her kind heart and servant leadership. Thank you Skaggs!

Willard Intermediate School- South

WISS MMEA Honor ChoirWIS-South is proud of our MMEA All-State Children's Choir students: Anna, Quinten, Jade, Rayna and Sophia. They performed in the Missouri Elementary Honor Choir on January 22 at Tan-tar-a Resorts.

We've enjoyed learning from guests in our building recently. Thanks to the High School Theater department who came to share their rendition of the "Stinky Cheese Man" story with our students. We'd also like to welcome two new student teachers in 5th grade, Ms. Austin and Ms. Doss to our school family. Finally, our school is enjoying the partnership with Missouri State University that brings educators from around the world to observe in our classrooms. It's been a great opportunity for teachers and students to learn from each other.

With February upon us, our students are very excited for the kick-off of student leadership teams. Through our Leader in Me program students are able to use the habits to serve others. We can't wait to see their impact on our school community.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to our school counselor, Mrs. Johnson, who works tirelessly to listen, support, teach, lead and take care of our WIS-South family. It may be Counselor Appreciation Week, but we appreciate her service everyday!

WN 100 Day ReadersJanuary has been a great month full of learning! We celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday, January 31. We are 100 days smarter! We also held our monthly Tiger Pride and had Officer Compton, from the Springfield Police Department, come in and speak about how he uses the 7 Habits in his job. He did a great job and we appreciate him taking the time to speak to us.

We also held our Read-A-Thon this month and look forward to wrapping it up with our Family Reading Night. Due to snow our Family Reading Night will now be Thursday, February 13! We have had several guest readers in the building, including several of our very own high school students!

Mrs. Reed took several students who qualified to the Missouri Music Educators Association Children's All State Choir. They did an amazing job performing.

WS Student Teachers

We've had the amazing opportunity to partner with Missouri State University's Internship Academy for a second year. We have four amazing interns this year that are serving, learning, and leading along with us. Mrs. Berry, Ms. Edwards, Mrs. Reno, and Ms. Saunders are such a great addition to our Willard South team!

Through the Internship Academy, our interns receive a full year of teaching experience rather than a traditional 12 week student teaching experience. They are able to collaborate, plan, and co-teach with master teachers within our building. To be accepted into the Internship Academy, interns must go through an intensive application and interview process before being accepted to Willard South.

We are so proud of our interns and the compassionate educators they have become!

Willard Central
WC February 2020Willard Central kicked off the new year with a flurry of learning activities in January. We celebrated our 13th Annual All-School Family Book Club reading A Boy Called Bat. We were able to Skype in with the author, Elana Arnold, to help us improve our craft as writers. We also enjoyed a family night with activities inspired from the book.

From instructional units on money to non-fiction reading/writing on the Revolution, our students have also been busy! One of the highlights was the Continental Congress Debate in 4th grade. Students were excited to research reasons dividing the Loyalists and the Patriots and were "enthusiastic" in their debate over going to war.

WC 4th GradeOur Caring Kids Student Leadership Team helped us celebrate The Great Kindness Challenge. We had spirit days while taking the challenge to serve others and intentionally focus on spreading kindness. WC leaders also had the chance to cheer on the Chiefs! Thank you to Mr. Joel Baker, our computer lab instructor, for capturing some of that Chief's fever for the big game. You can watch our tribute to Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs on our Facebook page.
