We want all students in Willard Public Schools to have an educational experience that prepares them to be lifelong learners and contributors. Now, more than ever, learning experiences for our students must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but must also foster critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills and mindsets our students need to thrive. The Portrait ensures that Willard students are well-equipped for the broadest range of post-secondary opportunities—whether it be employment, enrollment in a post-secondary school, enlistment in the military, or entrepreneurship.

The Portrait of a Graduate (Tiger) is the first step in framing a new vision for our school district. From our Kindergarteners to our Seniors, this work has an enduring impact. The Portrait represents our North Star, a culmination of extensive collaboration, research, and dedication to defining these six key competencies our students need to thrive in school and in their future. Each of us will play an important role in making the Portrait of a Tiger a reality for every student as we continue to create meaningful learning experiences every day. 

Supporting our Strategic Plan goals, the district began the Portrait process at the beginning of 2025. The development of our Portrait of a Tiger began with the formation of a dynamic Portrait Design Team, consisting of 65 members including business leaders, community stakeholders, parents, students, and alumni. Partnering with Battelle for Kids, our team developed a collective vision for our students' future, guided by input from diverse voices across our community.

Over a four-month timeline starting in January, the Design Team conducted four meetings focused on:

• Assessing global changes and their impact on student needs.

• Identifying essential competencies for success in an evolving world.

• Contextualizing these competencies within a local vision for our district.

• Strategizing ways to ensure every student achieves the goals outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate.

This Portrait will now serve as a compass for our district—providing strategic direction and guiding how we design learning experiences that prepare students to thrive in an ever-changing world. It's more than a vision; it's a promise we are making to every student and family in Willard.
